Understanding Position Changes

Position changes show how your keyword rankings have moved over time. We track three timeframes: 1-day, 7-day, and 30-day changes. Each gives you a different perspective on your ranking trends.

How position change is calculated

Position Change = Previous Position - Current Position

A positive number means improvement (your ranking went up). A negative number means a drop (your ranking went down). This might feel backwards at first, but think of it this way:

Example: Reading position changes
  • Position changed from 15 to 10: Change = 15 - 10 = +5 (improved by 5 spots, shown in green)
  • Position changed from 10 to 15: Change = 10 - 15 = -5 (dropped by 5 spots, shown in red)
  • Position stayed at 8: Change = 8 - 8 = 0 (unchanged)

The three timeframes

Timeframe Comparison Tolerance Best for
1-day Yesterday vs. today Strict (exact day) Spotting sudden changes, algorithm updates
7-day ~7 days ago vs. today +/- 2 days Weekly trends, filtering out daily noise
30-day ~30 days ago vs. today +/- 2 days Monthly trends, measuring SEO progress

Why the +/- 2 day tolerance?

Google Search Console data isn't always available for every single day. Sometimes a day's data arrives late or has gaps. For 1-day changes, we use a strict same-day comparison because recent data is almost always available. But for 7-day and 30-day lookbacks, we allow a 2-day window on either side. If data for exactly 7 days ago isn't available, we'll use the closest available day within that window.

GSC data delay: Google Search Console data is typically available 2-3 days after the actual search date. So "today's" position data actually reflects searches from 2-3 days ago. This is a Google limitation that affects all tools using GSC data.

Where you'll see position changes

Position changes appear in two places:

  • Dashboard: Shows aggregate counts of how many keywords improved, dropped, or stayed unchanged across all three timeframes
  • Keywords page: Shows the specific position change for each individual tracked keyword. You can sort by any timeframe to find your biggest movers

Biggest movers

The Dashboard also highlights your biggest gains and biggest drops for the day. These are the keywords with the largest 1-day position changes, helping you quickly spot keywords that need attention or that are trending in the right direction.

Tip: Small daily fluctuations (1-2 positions) are normal. Focus on 7-day and 30-day trends for a clearer picture of your SEO progress. If a keyword drops significantly in the 1-day view but has been stable over 30 days, it's likely just normal volatility.
